Eating well can help prevent weight gain (or aid weight loss) and reduce the risk of major illness such as heart disease or cancer. It may not mean giving up your favourite foods completely - just including them in a well balanced diet.
In 2001 the Food Standards Agency produced guidelines for eating well. The Balance of Good Health recommends.
Enjoy your food
Eat a variety of different foods
Eat the right amount to be a healthy weight
Eat plenty of foods rich in starch and fibre
Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables
Don't eat too many foods that contain a lot of fat
Don't have sugary food and drink too often
If you drink alcohol, drink sensibly
